Character Information:
Within Touken Ranbu the year is 2205, and the Saniwa Sage holds the ability to bring swords to life, using them towards the goal of stopping historical revisionists from changing history. With this, Yamatonokami Yasusada was one of the many swords that was brought into a human form by the use of their powers. This was done when the Saniwa Sage gave him life as a Tsukumogami spirit. However, his true self is the actual blade by his side. They are to make sure that history remains untouched by the opposing forces who wish to keep certain people alive, or change various events to work in their favor. Since Yasusada is a common drop within the game, he is easy to collect and has stayed at the citadel, the place where the Saniwa's swords are stationed, for a longer time than many of the other swords.
Before this Yamatonokami Yasusada was one of the two uchigatana swords owned by Okita Souji, a member of the Shinsengumi. Because Souji was his most influential master, he is the one who shaped Yasusada's entire personality, and Yasusada's history is based around the events that he experienced with him. Being part of the Shinsengumi, they held a huge impact on history, and showed great swordsmanship within it. Unfortunately Yasusada's master was also ill with a disease called tuberculosis, a sickness which caused Souji to become weaker and limited his body from doing things that he enjoyed, like training and fighting. Because of this, Yasusada was not able to see as many battles with Souji as the other swords who were able to go out and fight for their cause, since their masters had nothing that would hold them back.
Yasusada holds historical attachment to map 1-4, Toba, which features The Story of Okita recollection. For the Shinsengumi, the battle of Toba-Fushimi was to protect the Tokugawa Shogunate. Okita Souji was unable to come here for he was sent to a guesthousing in Edo where he was to recover from his illness. Sadly, Souji had passed away during his stay there from the tuberculosis that ate away at his system. When it comes to Yasusada, his blade was unused in the battle of Toba-Fushimi.
Map 6-3, the second floor of the Ikedaya Inn, also has the Ikedaya Affair - Raid memory. The Ikedaya Incident is an armed encounter with the shishi, also known as the Sonno Joi, a group of Japanese political activists that went against the Shinsengumi. The shishi were using Ikedaya Inn as a place for their forces to gather. When Okita Souji was present, he was following through with the Shinsengumi's plans, but his sickness got the best of him; during a fight his body became exhausted, and he broke his sword: Kashuu Kiyomitsu. Since Kiyomitsu broke on the battlefield, this made Yamatonokami Yasusada the only sword left at Souji's disposal after his collapse.
As the illness ate away at Souji's health and he had passed, it is believed that his sister had taken the sword Yamatonokami Yasusada with her while riding a rickshaw. Upon getting out of the vehicle, she forgot to bring the sword along with her — losing the weapon and never able to recover it's whereabouts again.

Personality:
Upon being introduced to Yasusada, he is a character who is heavily impacted by the events that have happened in his past, and he was affected by his master, Okita Souji, to the point where his entire existence circles around him. He holds onto the past more tightly than the other swords, and this is shown when he’s taken to certain maps of the game, which prompt him to speak about Souji. (In Toba, he comments about how they (Kashuu and Yasusada) weren’t able to come here together with Souji. Although this was a time where Yasusada should have been more concerned about defeating the revisionists, he put his thoughts about Souji first.) Still, Yasusada cares about his master enough to participate in the battles of the game, even though Souji had died from sickness, not from war. Even with the chance to change the situation if he wants, such as when he speaks to Kanesada in Ikedaya about their goal, Yasusada - with reassurance and understanding - states that he will not allow the revisionists to change the way that Souji is to die. This shows that he follows the mission that the Saniwa has given each and every sword — to preserve their masters’ dignity, and to make sure that the way they died remains set in stone.
He takes after Souji in many ways that make them alike, to the point where it seems nostalgic. Yet, despite their similarities, Yasusada’s personality is not a carbon copy of Souji’s — he merely takes after him in certain aspects of his personality, especially the parts that stand out to others at first.
The calm, soothing air that Yasusada has about him makes it easy for others to be around someone as gentle as him. He enjoys being around people; and to show that he gets along with new people fairly well: when a new sword is obtained from forging, he’ll say, "A new friend, huh?”, already placing the title of them being his friend at the start of their relationship, even if they hadn't met. When he meets new people, he wants to be kind to them, even if they haven’t been around the Citadel for as long. Just meeting them is enough to bring a smile to his face. More often than not, Yasusada’s head tends to be in the clouds, due to how lost in his thoughts he can be, and this results in him thinking about things that others don’t usually tend to think about. During horsekeeping, he says, “Did you know? Horses have sparkly eyes.” This quote from his horse keeping chore shows that his spacey and air-headed nature can be childish. He's thinking of the horses eyes, which is enough to excite him and motivate him to work.
When Yasusada is assigned chores, whether they be fieldwork or horsekeeping, he’s a hard-working sword. Most swords will usually complain about not wanting to work, but Yasusada completes the duties without a single complaint. Getting his hands dirty is the least of his concerns, a mentality that he tries to pass onto others — primarily onto Souji’s other sword, Kashuu Kiyomitsu, who insists on avoiding his share of the work. Still, Yasusada makes sure that Kiyomitsu doesn’t slack off. As seen from his quote to Kiyomitsu: “Hey, don’t you skip out on this.”, Yasusada is very responsible about finishing work that’s given to him. However, chores aren’t the only type of work that is given to the swords by the Saniwa, as there are also “sorties” (battles/missions) that they have to go on into enemy territory. Before a sortie, Yasusada states, ”I should get into the right mood… let’s sortie! Oraa!” He takes his work seriously, even fixing his attitude to match the situation.
Unfortunately, during battle, Yasusada’s temperament takes a turn for the worse. This is another trait that he inherited from Souji: his ruthlessness in battle, the polar opposite of his kind, gentle demeanor outside of battle. This attitude brings out a new person in Yasusada: one that isn’t afraid of battle and will enjoy it no matter what. His bloodthirsty nature and his joy for killing are seen when he says, “Even if you don’t stir me up that much, I’ll stab you splendidly,” showing that even if someone is going easy on him, he won’t return the favor. In order to ensure that the battle is exciting, he wants to cause as much damage as possible, because he’s putting his best efforts in showing off his strength. It doesn’t take much for Yasusada to start stabbing his enemies repeatedly, as long as there is a battle — it’s enough to drive him towards a frenzy of killing. Overall, when it comes to fighting, a new side of him is said to appear, similar to Souji himself; Yasusada’s profile says that this part of his personality is noted to be his “unique fascination when fighting in the battlefield”.
Yasusada's profile states that, "Because the sword is difficult to use, he chooses his own master,” which is a crucial point to how he carries himself. Not just anyone can claim to be his master, and in his introductory quote of "Yamatonokami Yasusada. Not easy to handle, but a good sword,” he explains that his blade was considered difficult for most to use — at least, to its full capabilities. Of the three masters that Yasusada has had, Souji was the only one who was able to bring out Yasusada’s full potential, which is why Yasusada believes that his "choice in making Souji his owner" was accurate. When he was with Souji, Yasusada not only saw his skill in handling a tedious blade like him, but he also saw the admiration that others had for him. For him, Souji was the ideal person to take after. From his stay by Souji's side and then losing him in the end, there are various times where Yasusada brings up his name in conversations of wanting to be closer to him, if he could be like him — be with him.
But although Yasusada’s admiration of Souji led him to adopt many of his traits, they are not the same person; at the end of the day, Souji is just someone who he admires, and there are also points where their personalities don't align. Souji wanted to live and be useful to the Shinsengumi without his illness breaking his body down — on the contrary, Yasusada would be willing to die if it meant he could be with the person who loves him the most. And as his master is the only person who falls into that category, Yasusada does not mind dying in order to be with him. When Yasusada is destroyed in battle, he states, ”Okita-kun… Finally… With you…”, showing that he feels most comfortable being back with Souji again. Even if he’s promised to stay with his friends at the Citadel, he’s willing to throw all of that away in order to be with the person who brought out his truest capabilities and made him feel valuable. So although Yasusada’s and Souji’s personalities are similar and match up in various areas, their priorities are very different.
Yamatonokami Yasusada also shares a strong bond with an uchigatana named Kashuu Kiyomitsu, as they were both wielded by the same master. Their relationship isn't like everyone else's, which are like brothers or partners — Yasusada and Kiyomitsu are better classified as rivals. They are always seen arguing or fighting over something minuscule, and while there are moments where they're able to get along like family, in the end it seems that Yasusada has to watch over Kiyomitsu, cleaning up his mess (or their messes). However, there are matters where they don't see eye to eye, and one of them is Souji. Kiyomitsu doesn't idolize Souji the same way Yasusada does because he, as a sword, was broken by Souji. When their sortie revisits the Ikedaya Affair, where this occurred, Yasusada has to make sure that Kiyomitsu is paying attention and not putting himself in danger like before. Since he doesn't pay Yasusada any mind and doesn't take the situation seriously, Yasusada's says to him: "Sigh... Don't blame me if you let your guard down and get injured or broken, alright?" With this, Yasusada acknowledges how similar he and Souji are, because Kiyomitsu blamed their master for breaking him — Yasusada states this so that Kiyomitsu can't blame him in Souji's place if history repeats.
Another relationship that he has with other members of the Shinsengumi is with Nagasone Kotetsu, the sword of squad leader Isami Kondo — the instructor and trainer of Okita Souji. They follow their master's roles when it comes to sparring, and Nagasone asks him the following: "Now, let's see whether you've gotten rusty." Nagasone wants to check up on how Yasusada's skills have been, and if they've diminished because he wasn't around. To Yasusada, this isn't an insult but a challenge for him to show that even without Nagasone's presence, he's been keeping himself in shape. Yasusada's reactions towards Nagasone make him a mirror of his master because he is being taught by the sword of Souji's teacher. Because the way they act aligns with their masters, Yasusada takes Nagasone's critiques to heart so that his fighting style can get better.
Yasusada's characteristics take after Souji because he was able to bring out the full potential of Yasusada's sword. Being the only one to do so, Yasusada takes after many traits that belonged to the owner who made him capable. If his feelings towards Okita Souji were to be said in a word, it would have to be "love". He loves his master more than anyone else, and since he was given so much by Souji in the past, he searches for that love in this life as well. When he chooses his own master, searching for "someone who loves him", the way Yasusada defines love is to have his full potential brought out in battle, and to be used — which only Souji capable of doing. His quote, "I wonder who the person who loves me the most is?" is his search for the person who is able to use him just like Souji could. He is unable to receive that feeling from the Saniwa, because he doesn't believe they can give him the kind of love that he seeks. After his heart has longed for Souji for so long, Yasusada doesn't know if he can gain love from anyone else, but he will still search.
In the end, Yamatonokami Yasusada is a kind sword; he holds good intentions even if he's spacey from time to time. He makes sure to do his best with anything that he has to do, and to remain responsible during his tasks, whether they are chores or sorties. During his battles, he becomes a different person because of how much he enjoys them. This is because his attachment to Souji is very apparent through the similarity of their personalities, even in battle. If it weren't for his time spent with his master in the past, Yasusada's entire life would hold no meaning compared to what it has now. So while carrying that past on his shoulders, he will go with others towards the future that is offered to them by the Saniwa Sage.

( At a time like this, there's only so many things that he can think about — one would have to be the loss of his purpose. To know that his body is changing, to know that he's becoming something else than what he was crafted to be, he can feel his bond with Okita Souji slowly breaking. A hand slowly runs up his arm, feeling the fur that's beginning to cover his upper body and he isn't too fond of it. There's only so much that he has to call his own and with the transformations that are making home onto his body — he doesn't know how long he'd be able to call himself a capable sword. )
If something like this was to happen to Okita-kun.. what would he do?
( What would he do? Would he fight this feeling of something new devouring his entire person? Or would he be someone to accept it? Yasusada likes to think he knows his master best, that he knows what he would want because of how close he is to him. As he slowly falls down to his knees, he finds himself with a smile on his face. Okita Souji had an illness and while that ate away at his body, he didn't ever allow it to deter him from his happiness. So he shouldn't allow the same either. There's a small chuckle as he tries to find the same smile that Souji had himself — the one that would never falter as his life slowly begun to shorten. )
I can still be capable and like this, I'll be able to help others. That's something Okita-kun would want from me.
( It has to be. Upon that realization, he should know better than to let a few minuscule changes get him down. No matter what happens to him, as long as he keeps fighting — he'll be able to help others. He nods to himself as he exhales a deep breath, coming to terms from a capable blade to a capable monster. He can only hope that becoming this creature, whatever he's about to become; that he can continue to protect the people important to him just like his own master. )
