( Mutsu and Yamato might get along like cats and dogs but if it's an order from Haru, they can put their differences aside, surely?! With shopping list in hand, the two had gone out to buy some groceries to bring back to the apartment and while it was probably one of the more tense and awkward shopping trips they'd ever had to make, it was a successful one! Together, they'd managed to set their differences and attitudes aside long enough to find everything on the list! And look... they'd even found a couple of sales and had some left over change. Just enough for them to maybe treat themselves to something small as a reward.
Mutsu counts the money to himself for a moment and then asks Yamato before they return home, )
[ Yamato can be a kind sword when he wants to be and he knows not to step on any toes, since well, he doesn't want to cause the other to be upset. They have had moments where one phrase will send the other off running in the opposite direction or just a small little fistful of arguments. Nothing too bad, not as bad as when they tried to drown each other but they don't talk about that. It's a truce that they would never bring that up near their Saniwa, they ain't trying to have any frowny stickers on their ass.
Shopping is nice because Yamato becomes amazed at every little thing like a child, wondering what's inside and if he can open it. Which, hopefully, Mutsunokami would tell him no since that would mean they'd have to buy it or maybe they'd hide it inside some cooler. So with every step, what can be seen is Yamato picking up a few boxes and looking at the contents, his eyes are bigger than his stomach ( no they're not, he's as bad as Namazuo and can stomach anything. The addition of being an Okitagumi with a master who could hardly eat his fill. ) and he wants to try everything.
Picking up a box gummy worms, he tilts his head and his eyes widen as he gasps. ]
Do they move? Eating worms is a delicacy here? I never knew, this please is truly an experience. We should free them, what if they suffocate!
( First, Mutsu is glad that Yamato has held up his end of this unspoken deal to not speak of the drowning incident. It's good because neither of them want frowny face stickers, especially when Mutsu was doing so well post-microwave explosion.
Second, Mutsu tries to keep an eye on Yamato in the store but alas, he only has one pair of eyes and Mutsu himself is always wide eyed when it comes to shopping so while he has more important things to do than ooh and aah at the candy that pops in your mouth, he really isn't paying 100% attention to Yamato. While they could hide the damaged goods, his merchant spirit feels obligated to pay for the damages done. He's a good merchant sword-- not a dirty one.
He's going down the display of candies when Yamato finds the box of gummy worms and as amusing as it is, Mutsu is always more baffled by Yamato's reactions than anything. Is how Haru feels when he goes shopping with Mutsu? Ugh, Yamato is more of a kid than him! Though, to be fair, by now, Mutsu's just been out more. )
Are ya serious? ( Really? )Those aren't real. ( That is to say, in Cerealia, there are certainly places where you can buy real candied gummy worms but this is not one of those stores.
He's also reaching out to put one hand firmly on the box to keep Yamato from opening yet another bag in the store because they only have so much money left over! Another opened box and he'll really have to start hiding things in freezers and behind shelves. ) Hey, hey, I told ya to stop opening things!
[ Yamato knows better not to bring up anything that's happened in the past, even from how past oriented he really is. Besides, it's not like someone really died there and here they both are, shopping without any other care in the world. That isn't really the true struggle that the other had to go through, it's right now from how Yamato is new to all this advanced technology and things that makes hm want to open every box in order to free the gummi worms, the bears and whatever else seems sealed and needs to be free.
He looks up when the other is just appalled by his decisions, growing tired and explaining that none of it is real. Which takes the uchigatana a moment to register as he can feel weight upon the box he wanted to open. ] Huh? Why wouldn't they be real? I think they're suffocating, if we let them out we could save their lives. Don't you want to help them?
[ Why is Yamato so innocent but inside he has a hidden killer inside? ] Then did you want to open them, I didn't hear anything about you not doing it. If you pull up this flap right here, we can get it open so you may do the honors. [ Handing over the box means Yamato can just go and get another box, do you really want to play these games. ]
( Ugh, he's still holding onto the box but he doesn't quite take it back either. He knows he needs to keep something in Yamato's hands or else who knows what he'll do next. Choke on a kinder egg??? )
C'mon, ya think people really eat real live candy worms? ( And then there's a bit of an exasperated sigh, ) Look, if ya wanna set 'em free ya gotta buy 'em first. Ya can't go openin` things without buying them or else we're gonna get in trouble.
( He's also holding up this bag full of random candies and goodies that Yamato's damaged, )
Oh.. so they aren't actually real. Hm, I don't think I belong in such a modern world. Ahaha.
[ Why is Mutsunokami like this? When will he let Yamato live life which seems to be a long future away as he waits for the other to release the kraken — well worms to the new world. But that isn't what's happening!! So what he does is look around at the bags of candy before he speaks up again. ]
Is there anything that you'd want me to get? I really don't know about many of these things, Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki. It's all unfamiliar to me, so I wouldn't know what's best. Do you mind choosing for me?
Maybe, maybe not but ya're here now so ya might as well get used to it.
( Same advice he's been giving for centuries, tbh... Not that he expects Yamato to really follow through. at least, not as thoroughly as some of the others. Yamato truly is a sword of the past, not that there's anything horrible about that. Mutsu can appreciate the traditional, but it's important to learn and adapt too.
He makes a bit of a face when Yamato asks if there's anythign he wants him to get. If there was something he wanted Yamato to get for him, he would have skipped the middle man and just gotten it for himself. But he understands why Yamato is asking....
And so with a bit of a sigh, he takes the box of gummy worms and tosses it into their basket. He'll get these. If only to show Yamato that they are, indeed, not real. )
I dunno... ( He feels like he's about to make a big decision, ) What kinda things do ya like...?
( They've been in the army together this long and he doesn't even know what Yamato likes??? )
Huh? .. Get used to it? [ He repeats the phrase as if he's unable to do such a thing but he knows better. He should be able to move on and adjust to what's here but to him, it's still hard. There are a lot of things now that he never though he would see before. There's silence in the air as he finds himself indulging in his own thoughts, not paying attention when the box is taken from him and thrown into the cart.
It's the sound of children that are laughing nearby which brings him back, a blink after the other as he turns his head and remembers that they're still the same. Children who still know how to both laugh and play even if the years continue to change. There's a smile upon his lips as he turns back to Mutsunokami, trying to remember what they were talking about. ]
I like.. [ What does he like? Well, if he has to be honest. ] to see children happy.. and I like peace and quiet.. to read a good book now and then. Training.. [ OKITA-KUN! ] I like those things. [ Hiding his hands back into the sleeve of his haori, he speaks up once more. ]
( It really just confirms what Mutsu already knows-- Yamato is one of the ones that struggles to adapt to keep with the times. It's so weird when compared to his other half, Kashuu, who has taken to the modern world in such a way that even Mutsu is impressed.
Still waiting for an answer, he's about to grab the other spirit and drag him along their way if he doesn't hurry up and answer but-- ah. )
. . .
( That isn't the type of answer he was expecting but he supposes it is an answer to his question. Ugh, this is more than he wanted to know and he frowns a bit, though, it's more out of serious thought than being upset or anything really negative. Even more, he isn't expecting to be asked the same question back. How can he really answer that after Yamato?
Buying himself some time, he fiddles with his wallet, checking the balance on their card between answers. )
I don't think we can buy any of those things. Or afford them right now if we could.( It's a joking answer in response to Yamato's answer. He then puts away his wallet, turning on his heel, and grabbing Yamato's sleeve, pulling him along towards the check out line of the store. It's taken the entire trip but Mutsu has learned his lesson: Yamato is a child in a toy store here and needs his hand held in these situations.
... But Mutsu will never hold the hand of someone from the Shinsengumi. Gross. )
Lessee... I like a lotta things like... ( How is he going to answer this. ) Chocolate and candy and there's a drink here that uses ice cream and soda that's nice. ( Yes, going for more material answers here. ) But my favorite ...( which, anyone at sword haus would be able to figure out, based on how regularly he comes home with enough to share )... My favorite's castella.
( . . .
And only because Yamato had given him such a serious answer, he'll toss the other sword a bit of a bone, )
It used to be real popular in Nagasaki; I'd smell it all the time. ( And since they haven't had any missions or trips to Nagasaki, Yamato will probably be able to figure out that the last time Mutsu was ever in the port city was back when he was by Sakamoto's side. So, hah, spoilers, Yamato: Every time Mutsu's brought home sponge cake to share with his friends, he's been sharing an old memory about his master. How's that taste... ) There're a lot more flavors in this time but I like the original kind the most.
[ It's at this moment that Yamato has no complaints as he walks next to the other, call them friend or foe but he won't say against against either. To learn that the ideals he requested for cannot be bought, Yamato understands that but he doesn't wish to purchase. If he's able to have a chance to indulge for just a minute, maybe even two, that is enough for him. He's learned that he can't hold onto everything because one day — it'll all go. It will go and leave him behind so maybe he should cherish what he has, what he had. It's why the past is so important to him, it's why to partake in all these adventures that fill him with glee because it reminds him that everything before this holds a bigger meaning.
A shake of his head as he gives a smile, it doesn't go over his head at all but he does have something to say. As he sleeve is gripped, he does follow without hesitation but before they're able to walk into the line where they need to check out, Yamato pauses to gain the other's attention. ]
Those things that I wanted.. please understand Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki. It shouldn't have to be bought, by all means.. the memories are enough for me. I guess you can say that bought me over. These things.. everything around me.. is all so different.
[ Was he really to make it this for? Questioning his own survival. ]
But to hear the things that you like.. it doesn't make us so different. In the end, there's something we look forward to. [ Not like Yamato has to be deep, he's just bringing up a small point that doesn't matter. It comes with being human. Well, as human as they can get within these bodies that were granted by them by their Sage. ]
Castella.. huh? [ A pause, as he thinks about what it is and how Mustunokami seems to find it delicious, he looks off to the side as he slowly removes the sleeve of his haori from the other's hand as he takes a step forward. ] Things change, do they not. But there's always something we look forward to from the past, it's nice to know that something from before is still your ideal.
[ Looking at the cart to see it's contents that are to be purchased. ]
Huh.. thank you for sharing that with me. I'll make sure to remember. To learn something new.. ha.. You have a unique taste. Literally, you know? Perhaps, we should purchase that? Do you think they sell it here.. before we go.
( Mutsu stops with Yamato, looking back at the other spirit to see what the problem is now except that clearly isn't the case, is it?
Whether he likes it or not, Mutsu is listening to Yamato, giving him his full and undivided attention. For all of his loud and boisterous talking, he's an impressively good listener. Perhaps this is something else he's learned from his old master-- Sakamoto was a great negotiator and one doesn't become as successful as him without listening to others.
Are they similar? Sure, there are certainly things they have in common but that's only natural. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of things that make them who they are, surely there would be some overlap. But are they really similar? The thought makes him uncomfortable if only because for so long, they've both agreed that they were too different from each other. They aren't alike. They can't be alike. They're different. )
Well... yeah. ( He responds to Yamato as if he's speaking about something so obvious, ) Just 'cause I'm workin` for the future and I like new things... that doesn't mean I don't like old things. I'm an old-fashioned sword too.
( Old fashioned. Not as powerful compared to a gun. But just as good, right? )
I think I know something we can get. But we gotta go somewhere else ta get it. ( . . . And he waits for Yamato to agree or disagree with the idea. ) I'm not gonna tell ya what it is though! It's gonna be a surprise.
[ There's some sort of understanding at the male's words, he's old fashioned but like new things. Yamato wonders if that's alright so that brings his other question to light, raising his voice so that it isn't as low as it normally is. He knows since they are side by side and Mutsunokami would be able to hear him, but there's something that plagues Yamato's mind. ] Does that mean, no matter all these new things that you start to like.. you'll always remember the things in the past that you loved? Still love? As long as you don't forget.. I guess it doesn't matter if we're old fashioned or not.
[ He tilts his head once he hears there's something the other wants to get and leaving from such a sad conversation, the uchigatana gives a nod as he's about to ask what it could be but Mutsunokami isn't willing to budge — stating that he isn't going to tell. ]
Is this a guessing game, you don't mind if I try a few times do you?
[ Not only that, but Yamato is willing to take over the shopping cart and push it through the line, what makes it even better it's one of those self check-outs and since Yamato is new to a world filled with technology: he knocks his hands against the scanner. ]
Excuse me, may I speak to the person so they may tell me a price for everything?
ACTION
Mutsu counts the money to himself for a moment and then asks Yamato before they return home, )
